Understanding the MATATAG Curriculum

The MATATAG curriculum is a basic educational curriculum that the DepEd launched in August 2023 and targets the holistic development of students. It addresses the shortcomings of the previous K-12 curriculum while focusing on strengthening foundational skills like literacy and numeracy, particularly in the early academic levels.

A significant objective is to streamline the learning content, thereby structuring the competencies accordingly and enabling students to master and understand topics deeply. The curriculum lays special emphasis on value formation, which impacts students’ well-being and helps create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

MATATAG stands for:

  • M (Makabong)—It relates to new or modern (referring to the curriculum).
  • TA (Talino)—It relates to intelligence or intellect (referring to the students).
  • TA (Tapang)—It relates to courage or bravery (referring to the student’s resilience).
  • G (Galing)—It relates to excellence or skill (referring to the Filipino student’s potential).

Objectives of the MATATAG Curriculum

1. Decongested Curriculum

The previous K-12 curriculum was quite expansive and covered a wide range of topics and competencies across various grade levels. This led to curriculum overload, causing teachers to undergo the pressure of covering a large amount of content within a limited timeframe.

In contrast, the MATATAG curriculum reduces the number of learning competencies across various subjects. Hence, teachers and students are able to focus on the most essential skills and concepts, fostering in-depth exploration, application, and mastery.

Teachers get the opportunity to implement diverse educational strategies, address students’ learning needs, and create a manageable learning experience. Likewise, it helps to eliminate overwhelming learning environments and promotes deeper and contextual understanding.

2. Develop Competent and Job-Ready Graduates

The curriculum highlights the importance of upskilling students so that they can prosper in the 21st-century workplace and solve problems effectively. Hence, it integrates crucial skills like critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving across different learning areas.

Thanks to the curriculum, students will learn to analyze information, find suitable solutions to problems, and adjust to the ever-evolving demands of the modern workplace. It encourages teachers to employ group projects or assignments, thereby indicating the importance of collaboration and communication.

Implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum

The Department of Education will implement the curriculum in phases, which will begin with kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7 in the academic year 2024-25. The curriculum will be integrated with other grade levels in the coming years. The phased implementation approach will help to make necessary adjustments and refinements, depending on the initial implementation experiences.

It is important to note that although the curriculum retains the basic education levels (kindergarten, elementary, junior high school, and senior high school), it includes revised content and learning competencies in each level. This helps to establish a sequential learning structure, wherein students can learn and understand effectively across various grade levels.
